Tennessee Hoss Outdoor Wood Furnace

They’re not practical for everyone, or in every location, but for many American families, an outdoor wood furnace offers substantial cost savings. That is if you’re willing to put in the work. They can also provide heat for multiple locations such as a home and garage (the featured Tennessee Hoss furnaces offer this feature).

How long will they heat?

This depends on the model and size of the outdoor furnace, the type and density of the wood used, and the heating demands of the furnace. However, if heating just your home, one load can last for 24 hours.

Can it work with my current system?

An outdoor wood furnace will in fact work with your current forced air system. An outdoor furnace heats water, and this hot water is run underground (typically) via piping to a heat exchanger inside your home. An air handler is used to move the heated air throughout your home — this is the same air handler that is needed for your air conditioner. If you currently have a gas furnace and not just an air handler, speak to your HVAC contractor about what modifications would need to be made.

Outdoor Wood Furnace Cost Savings

This depends on the area and spaces being heated. However, if you currently heat with propane, you could experience energy savings by over 70%, even if you don’t have your own wood source.
